There’s something deeply satisfying about taking a risk in print—especially when it pays off. At The Big Pic, we don’t just dabble in aesthetics. We dive headfirst into what’s possible. Every new week brings a fresh obsession, and this week? We pushed the boundaries on how texture, colour, and interactive elements can collide in print to create something truly next-level.
Our Experiment: Soft Meets Bold
We began with a simple question: what happens when you combine understated, recycled textures with loud, luxurious finishes? The goal was to create contrast that doesn’t compete—one that feels like a whisper and a shout in the same breath.
Here’s what we tested:
-
Soft-touch recycled laminate: Matte, warm, almost skin-like. Made from 80% post-consumer fibres.
-
Gold foil overlay on grayscale illustrations: Delicate line work that shimmers when the light hits it just right.
-
Spot UV on textured card stock: Subtle until you tilt the angle—then it gleams.
We weren’t aiming for something overproduced. We wanted that rare combo of tactile depth and visual punch. And honestly? It delivered.
Surprises We Didn’t Expect
The recycled laminate played surprisingly well with the foil—it didn’t bubble or warp.
The UV gloss layered onto textured stock created a multi-level feel that begged to be touched.
Our minimalist colour palette (black, grey, gold) made the piece feel both grounded and aspirational.
It wasn’t perfect—we had to tweak pressure settings, play with drying times, and get nerdy with our foil temperatures—but those imperfections were part of the magic. The happy accidents became talking points.
What’s Next: Augmented Print
Next on the table? We’re working on embedding augmented reality (AR) into our next round of test prints. Imagine this:
You hand someone a business card. It’s embossed, beautifully printed.
They scan it with their phone. Suddenly, a 3D animation pops up, hovering just above the card.
It plays your brand story in motion—interactive, unforgettable.
That’s the level we’re chasing. Not just print that looks good, but print that lives.
